GI Consult Scheduled

Monday morning we will take Olivia to see the gastroenterologist for her feeding tube evaluation. We will see this provider at Bethesda so we'll be leaving early since we've only been to that facility once.

There are many questions that we will have, but if you can think of anything that would be helpful to know, please feel free to email before Sunday night, and we'll add it to our list.

Some of the things we now understand that we may not have before:
-A person can still eat orally even though they get their nutrition by tube.
-All of Olivia's meds can be given through the tube.
-She can get nutrition while she's sleeping.
-There is more than one type of feeding tube. They will determine which she needs based on its purpose.
-A feeding tube isn't necessarily permanent.

I'm sure I'll have more information after the visit Monday. Until then...

  1. I read your last post and this one at the same time - wow - so much for you to take it all at once, but it sounds like Olivia is in capable hands, and those doctor's know their stuff! Glad to hear there are some good aspects to having the feeding tube. Having had several spine surgeries, I can commisserate (in a really small way) with all the hardware that will have to be placed in her back. You are such a good mom, and I pray that you can breathe a sigh of relief that you are doing all you possibly can to make your dear daughter more comfortable. :) Kate Mauck

  2. Our appointment reminder said that the appointment is scheduled for Walter Reed. We will call in the morning on the way to ensure we're going to the right place.
