We went to Olivia's appointment yesterday. I expected that our focus was going to be the G Tube placement, and also expected to have to convince the doctor to do the surgery for the malrotation. As it went, though, Dr. Safford was extremely focused on the 'malro' and explained to us that it could be fatal, so it needs to be fixed. The discussion from there was primarily about the 'malro' and the procedure. When they're finishing up with that surgery, they'll put in the G-tube. Oh, and also they're taking her appendix out, pretty much for good measure.
I was astonished at the pace of the conversation, but I am not surprised. We first heard that Olivia would definitely need surgery on August 2, and since then we learned of the need for the feeding tube, had her in to have the NG Tube placed, and removed, had a fluoroscopy, which determined the malrotation. That's a pretty fast pace as well.
It is expected that the surgery will be done laparoscopy with 2 or 3 entry points. The recovery should be about a week. If they end up having to do open surgery, then the recovery would be two weeks or so.
So we have the what, but not the when. The computers were down, so we couldn't get an appointment scheduled yesterday. We do know that the surgery will be done on a Monday, the next Monday they have room, and within a month. It realistically could be this coming Monday. Hopefully everything will work out with everything else in our lives, to allow us to focus on that. We are trying to get a referral to stay either at the Fisher House or the BOQ or the Navy Lodge right there on the base.
When I find out the date, I'll post again.
