Olivia's surgeon was very pleased to see how well her "wound sites" are healing. It was by far the shortest time that we spent with him. He said if she's doing well, there's no need to take up a lot of time. We asked him about getting a Hoyer lift for Olivia. (Click here to see a Hoyer lift.) Having a Hoyer lift would help us move her as she gets bigger, and while my back is weaker. He told me to stop and talk to his case manager who put me in direct contact with the hospital case manager that was certain that it would be necessary for her to have it with her upcoming surgery. She said she'd be in contact with the equipment provider, and it should be no problem. I thought it would be a good idea to contact the equipment provider myself to see how long it will take. She said that a Hoyer lift is a "Fast track item" and we should have it delivered this week. She explained that they deliver it, and do the paperwork later. I can not believe it!!! God is good.
While in DC I called to report to the neurosurgeon that the numbness and pain is pretty much gone from my back & leg, but even though there's a reduction of weakness in my hip and knee, my foot is still pretty significantly weak. The worked me into the schedule, and we came up with a plan. I have a back brace that I will wear to remind me of my injury and limitations, and will go to therapy to have them track the weakness and help me learn some safe ways to do my everyday tasks. I am on the schedule for next Thursday, although we did this expecting that I'll cancel, but I won't feel that I am trapped in the "conservative way of treatment" if my symptoms worsen. The Physician's Assistant and the neurosurgeon agreed that this was a good plan. I left DC feeling comfortable with the plan, and we'll pray that it ends up to be a good plan.
Thanks for tuning in... It may be a while before the next post. I am not able to sit at the computer too long, so check back in a couple weeks to see how everything is going. :)
